🌍 Do I Need a Visa for Europe?
Most travelers don’t need visas for short-term European tourism—but requirements vary by nationality.
🇬🇧 UK & Ireland Passport Holders
- ✅ No visa needed: Can visit EU countries visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period
- ✅ Brexit hasn’t changed this: Tourist travel remains visa-free
- ⚠️ ETIAS from 2025: UK travelers will need to register for ETIAS (€7, valid 3 years) before entering EU—simple online form, not a visa
- ✅ Passport validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date
🇪🇺 EU Citizens
- ✅ Freedom of movement: No visas or restrictions for traveling within EU countries
- ✅ ID card or passport: Either accepted for travel
🌎 Non-EU/UK Travelers
- ⚠️ Check visa requirements: Depends on your passport nationality—contact embassies of countries you’re visiting
- ⚠️ Schengen visa: Many non-EU nationals need a Schengen tourist visa for short stays (covers 27 EU countries)
- ⚠️ Apply early: Visa processing can take several weeks—don’t leave it last-minute
⚠️ Your responsibility: We provide travel packages and logistics, but visa/entry requirements are your responsibility to research and arrange. Check official government websites for up-to-date information.
🏥 Do I Need Travel Insurance?
Yes—comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers before departure. It’s not included in your package price but essential protection.
What your travel insurance should cover:
- 🏥 Medical emergencies: Hospital treatment, doctor visits, ambulance services abroad
- 🚑 Emergency repatriation: Medical evacuation or return home if seriously ill/injured
- ✈️ Trip cancellation: Refund for non-refundable costs if you can’t travel due to illness, family emergencies, etc.
- 🎒 Lost/stolen belongings: Coverage for luggage, electronics, valuables
- 🚂 Travel delays: Compensation for missed connections, cancelled trains, accommodation costs from disruptions
- 🎫 Lost documents: Some policies cover emergency passport replacement costs
When to buy insurance:
- ✅ As soon as you pay your deposit: Trip cancellation coverage only works if purchased before issues arise
- ⚠️ Don’t wait until departure week: Pre-existing conditions won’t be covered if you buy insurance late
- ⚠️ Read the policy: Ensure it covers interrailing, multiple countries, and your planned activities
We can help:
We’ve partnered with specialist travel insurance providers to offer competitive rates for interrail travelers. Request a quote when you book, or arrange your own policy through providers like World Nomads, SafetyWing, or True Traveller.
⚠️ EHIC/GHIC is NOT enough: UK/EU travelers should carry a free GHIC card for basic medical coverage in EU countries, but this does NOT replace comprehensive travel insurance. GHIC covers emergency treatment only—not cancellations, repatriation, or lost belongings.
🎒 What Should I Pack for Interrailing?
Pack light—you’ll be carrying your bag on and off trains multiple times. Focus on essentials and versatile clothing.
Essential packing list:
- 🎒 Backpack or wheeled suitcase: 40-60L capacity—large enough for 1-4 weeks of travel
- 👕 Clothing: 5-7 days of mix-and-match outfits (you can do laundry en route)
- 👟 Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be walking 10-15km daily sightseeing
- 🧥 Light jacket/rain layer: European weather is unpredictable
- 🔌 Phone charger & power bank: Keep your phone/travel app charged
- 🔌 EU plug adapter: European sockets differ from UK/Ireland (Type C/F plugs)
- 💊 Basic medications: Painkillers, travel sickness tablets, any prescriptions
- 🧴 Toiletries: Travel-sized essentials (buy more en route if needed)
- 💳 Money belt or secure pouch: For passport, cards, and cash
- 🔒 Small padlock: For hostel lockers (if staying in hostels)
What NOT to pack:
- ❌ Excessive clothing: You don’t need 2 weeks of outfits—pack 5-7 days and do laundry
- ❌ Heavy guidebooks: Your travel app has city guides built-in
- ❌ Valuables: Leave expensive jewelry and sentimental items at home
- ❌ “Just in case” items: Europe has shops—you can buy forgotten items easily
💡 Golden rule: If you can’t comfortably carry your bag up a flight of stairs, you’ve packed too much. Trains don’t have porters—you’re lifting it yourself.
